During 1917, there were two revolutions in Russia, or it would be more correct to say that there was a single revolution which developed into two phases. The Political phase or March revolution, that occurred in March 1917, and it sealed the fate of the autocracy. Social phase or November(Bolshevik) Revolution occurred in November 1917 and it brought into existence the first workers Republic. The old Russia calendar was thirteen days behind the international calendar. According to the former, the first revolution occurred in February and the second in October.

Some Important notes on February Revolution

The weakness of Czarist Regime was exposed in the course of world war-1. Russia was badly beaten by the Germans in 1915. The Russian autocracy failed to meet the situation. A reactionary party headed by Czarina, under the guidance of Rasputin, advocated the immediate end of the war by making peace with Germany. This move is attempted to halt any revolution in Russia. But the people opposed any peace agreement in Germany.

This March revolution was not the outcome of the carefully engineered plot, but it was an outcome of a public discontent over the shortage of food. The bread hungry people organized strikes and disturbances, which broadened into insurrection, directed against the war and the Monarchy. These sufferings of the masses were aggravated by the weakness of the monarchy to prosecute the war against Germany and Austria.

on 8th March 1917, the women textile workers in Petrograd came out on strike with a demand for food. On 9th March other workers joined to strike and cried out for bread and also other crimes like Down with the war and Down with the autocracy were also made. The third day the outbreak was a general strike and manifested revolutionary tendencies. Five days later on 15th March 1917, the movement reached a climax. Czar Nicholas  II was forced to abdicate, the Duma setup up a Provisional Government.
